Using smartmontools to test a Motorola VIP1963 disk

As seen in my previous post, I’ve been having problems with some harddrives in my workstation. I’ve also had some problems with my TV’s digital box, a Motorola VIP1963.

At first there was some trouble with time-shift not working, but this could be resolved by simply rebooting the device. This wasn’t really worth noting because this device is constantly on and never rebooted, so I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Suddenly the other day, the device rebooted on it’s own, and when it came back up it gave me an error message saying that the harddrive could not be found. This message was in swedish:

Faulty system drive

I use a Compact Flash card as the system drive in my server. The purpose of this is to keep it cool and to keep the noise down. It doesn’t have any fans or moving parts at all, so it’s completely silent. A blue led is the only thing telling it’s powered on. Today I received reports in the mail about read errors on that drive:

Jan 29 12:20:17 warhammer kernel: [2067530.622415] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Unhandled sense code

Jan 29 12:20:17 warhammer kernel: [2067530.622499] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error - auto reallocate failed
Jan 29 12:20:17 warhammer kernel: [2067530.622514] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 c4 ce 28 00 00 08 00

Probably nothing more to do than exchanging the CF card to another one. I’ll use Clonezilla Live to migrate the system. I’ll probably upgrade to Oneiric Ocelot while I’m at it too…

New server hardware

I’ve just finished transferring the homepage to my new server.

ASUS at5nm10i

ASUS at5nm10i

The new hardware is basically a fanless ASUS AT5NM10-I. The mainboard is equipped with dual core Atom CPU’s and 2GB of RAM. The passive cooling makes this computer absolutely quiet. The computer case Morex 5689 is also fanless and have grating on all sides for ventilation. The PSU is an external AC/DC converter, delivering 12 Volts to the mainboard. This solution leaves any heat that normal PSU’s generates outside of the case. The case is mounted to the wall inside a cupboard. A mount plate is included to ease the installation to vertical or horizontal surfaces.
