KDE desktop field codes

This is a compilation of desktop field codes I use in KDE. There are more field codes, but they are deprecated and shouldn’t be used. This compilation was found on the Freedesktop homepage, and the following quote is their description of field codes:

A number of special field codes have been defined which will be expanded by the file manager or program launcher when encountered in the command line. Field codes consist of the percentage character (“%”) followed by an alpha character. Literal percentage characters must be escaped as %%. Deprecated field codes should be removed from the command line and ignored. Field codes are expanded only once, the string that is used to replace the field code should not be checked for field codes itself.

Unknown media type

When issuing dpkg or apt-get some messages appear among the usual output;

Don’t worry about the messages regarding Unknown media type. They refer to file associations in KDE which don’t have recognizable definitions.

You can get directly to your file associations, without sifting through settings, with the following command:

Adding package archive for KDE

Since I’m still running Lucid Lynx, updates for KDE is lagging behind a bit. To keep a bit more up to date with existing KDE updates, I’m adding a PPA found on Launchpad, to /etc/apt/sources.list:

# KDE updates
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

Update the package index:

apt-get update

Syncing Google calendar with Kontact (KOrganizer)

There are two ways I’ve managed to do this:

1) The first one is by adding an .ICS cal to your calendars. This will result in a Read-Only calendar, which might be okay if you’re ok with adding all your appointments from your mobile phone. If this solution actually was stable, it could be enough in some instances. Unfortunately Kontact gives me regular warning messages that the calendar is not accessible. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend this approach at all.

Basically you need to login to your Google account and activate sharing of your calendar. Once you know the URL to use, this information can be entered in Kontact. After this sharing of the calendar can be disabled.
